Well, we all know that WON kits give huge torque.......Seems that Perry forgot!

Hope he doesn't mind me posting this, when I left he was on his way home to get new half shafts and to re weld the diff cage as he mullered it!

Shame about that, as it looked like the start of a quick run. :(

And heres that launch in slo motion. Watch the nearside rear tyre unwind as the shaft lets go. This turns me towards the Xmas tree. But as I was fighting to steer right, the other shaft let go and I got her straight. This also trashed 3 pinion cogs. But she was up and running by 9pm Saturday night. I ran 11.2 @ 123mph into a 30 mph headwind on Sunday while I was doing the first gentle test run. Then i wound the power up and ran at full power to the 1/8th where I lost a plug and shut down to half throttle and still pulled an 11 second pass. So I'm sure I'm close to finding my sweet spot on the tune for this year.
I was late packing up in the pits, so Ian came by in his van and did the DVD burn on the fly on his laptop for me... Its nice to have friends eh?
This was a gentle launch for me. I had n2 delay set to 100ms which you can see as she spits rich smoke at the start of the launch. You can then see the exhaust clears as the gas comes in and the front of the car lifts a little more. This is when the drama occured :)
Big thanks to my Son and the rest of the crew who pulled the repair together for me.

Very interesting video clip. 8)

You should try finding the sweet spot from the rich side then you wouldn't be at risk of killing your engine and eating plugs.

Although I've never seen any other cars exhaust emissions in slow mo before, my common sense tells me that there's something wrong with your NA running (mixture or more likely ignition), for it to be so varied as that.

It might just be due to the nitrous delay you had but that would indicate the fuel gets there very quickly (which it may well), in which case you should reduce the delay.

Good times considering the situation.

Funny you should say that Trev!!
We found a damaged plug lead on the offside bank. So I put it on the trailer and will order new leads tomorrow ;)

She hooked up nice and solid with no drama's now I have the n2 delay dialled in at 100ms which seems to be what she likes. At 200ms there was a definate lag. Funny how you get to know your engine so well that you can just feel an issue that only lasts 200ms eh?

Still!
Onward and upwards. I'm back out in 2 weeks :D :D

I hope it does?? Number 6 lead had a nick in it that was shorting out to number 8...Bummer!
But I still made some good passes in the low 11's only 3mph under the 10.6 @ 126mph pb.

What size R888s are you using and what pressure were you running?

If i remember right they're 245/16's and were at about 15psi.

To be honest though, the shafts, as far as i know are original/21 years old and have taken alot of abuse, so i think i'td cracked on a previous run and then just let go on the R888's!

This was the end result,

Image

Just twisted and snapped where it goes into the offside hub.

Cant complain really!

Cheers.

That does look like a brittle fracture dude!!
My shafts tend to be a bit more supple. They twist a good way before finally letting go.
Mine break off in the diff as they get thicker towards the wheel end :)

Have either of you guys had your shafts modified from standard (and no dirty responses needed) ;)

My shafts look good but my u joints gave up.
On another E30 with same engine and rear end but on street tyres it was the same problem as you have.
In the end he was able to change the shaft in under 10 min with a replacement part in the trunk :D

No need for me Trev!!
The stock shafts take a shit load of abuse and I can get them for pennies at any time :)
Those shafts have been on the MGB fro over 3 years now, so I guess they were due to let go soon. I have spoken to a couple of race shacks who can get them copied in Strange or Moser forms. But as I still have 2 pairs left I guess I'll stick with them for a while. These shafts for my MGB V8 axle are the same as the 1800 MGB shafts in the Salisbury axle. My stock V8 shafts broke pretty quick on gas. But I find that these second hand shafts that have been seasoned over 30 years in weak ass 1800cc cars are strong as hell :)
I can pick up an old MGB Salisbury axle for £40 on ebay and take the shafts out. I then fit a £20 anti clonk washer kit to the diff cage and sell it for £30 on ebay ??
That makes sense to me mate

In that case you need to get them case hardened because the splines are too soft. I had the same thing happen to a set of 9" Ford shafts on the Escort which had been shortened but not hardened. After hardening they handled a shed load more power without twisting.

I run uprated cv joints, but unfortunately the next weak point is the shaft where they neck down going into the hubs. There are uprated shafts out there, but are a bit expensive for my liking!

Like perry, ive a few spare stock shafts, and luckily this is the first one ive snapped (destroyed a few gearboxes though), so will just replace with another for now, until if/when they become a constant problem.

Cheers.

Use my nitrous assisted launch techniques and breakages will be less likely than turbo launches.

I have to use rear tyre diameter to get my gearing. The engine makes its power low down in the rev range. At the mo I get peak torque at 4000rpm although she will happily rev to 6000. So as the years have gone by I have increased from 24" up 29" so I can make more use of the torque and get better wheel speed. I've just retarded my cam by 4 degree's this evening so that will hopefully shift my torque further up the rev range for testing next Friday. As the tyres get bigger and more sticky, the shafts get more abuse :)
Its all good fun I reckon :D
