Hello my fellow WoN users !!

I've got a nice fresh engine fitted now.
I knacked the old block due to a stupid hasty mistake in setting the nitrous contoller. DOH!!!

So for this build I've gone the whole hog and fitted heads with bigger valves and bigger ports. Its still a Rover V8 because I know that these old engines can make good power on the 1/4 mile.

I've also been spending my birthday money on some tuning parts. I can now log afr on both banks of the engine as well as manifold pressure and rpm. And the logging system can be expanded with EGT sensors and most importantly I can set alarm limits to shut stuff down or turn stuff on.

We took the car out last saturday to see how this was going to work. I have to admit that I got engrossed in the whole data logging experience. It showed up a good few useful bits of info. We did 7 passes while fiddling with the engine and data logs.

Long story short:

Previous PB on 12psi of boost and a 150 shot was 10.2 seconds with a 60 foot of 1.4 seconds. Previous PB on 12 psi of boost alone was 11.8 seconds. For my last shakedown run on Saturday I gave it the beans off the line with a max boost shown on the log of 6.8 psi. She ran a nice easy 11.2 seconds with a 60 foot of 1.6 seconds :)

So I think I'm going in the right direction.

If I can break the 10's with a bit more boost (I only need another 0.3) I hope that the nitrous will take me into the 9's next season. I cant see any reason why it wouldnt?? The nitrous has been the thing that pulled me from 11.8 to 10.2 on the 1/4 mile. On boost alone the engines work well but always seems to hit a flat spot in the rev range at full power. Especially when the blower gets heat soaked. The won stuff makes the engine come alive just when I need it to :)

Why oh why do all our good results seem to turn up as the weather is getting worse and the season is almost ending, just when we want that extra day or two on track? GGRRRRR !!!

I'm now going to be itching all winter waiting for the good weather next season..

Perry

Good luck!, I'd be happy with a mid 11 next year. 9's is really shifting!. Are you on an auto gearbox?.

Yes Keith!
Stock TH350 with a 2800 stall converter and B&M ratchet shifter. Although after 6 years of racing the box is getting lazy on the 1st to 2nd shift. Luckily I spent spare cash wisely over the last couple of years on Ebay etc as bargains popped up. Normally around Xmas time. So I have a spare stock th350 (which has already run 11.6 in my Sons Escort) + a rebuilt modified one (less than 50 miles use) with transbrake kit fitted and a working but noisy longtail th350 for spares.

I'm still learning about this engine build. Its a world away from the stock 4.6 with forged pistons and a blower cam.

The heads and valve gear are much better than stock and it just wants to breath everything I can throw at it at the moment.

I'll have it on the dyno in a few weeks so I can find the sweet spot on boost, fuel and timing. This is my last Rover build so I want to keep it safe. If this engine lets go before I find that 9.99 it will be a long time before I race again. I've blown this years and next years race budget already

Quick update!
Had it on the dyno set as per the last test run of 11.2 seconds. She only made 361hp and was running rich. I adjusted the ign timing to where it should be and she pulled 402hp. Still running afr as low as 9.8 at high rpm.

I was going to re jet and tune the engine on the edelbrock 800 carb in January. But I now have a 1050 Domintor carb to fit so I can start tuning again from scratch. If the manifold adaptor EVER arrives from Holley I'll be able to start testing on 20th Jan at the track.

I'm so looking forward to starting the shakedowns next month. I'm counting the hours

Sounds like a plan ;)

I'm sure 9.8afr is richer than ideal or it really needs to be?

Hopefully next year i'll be joining you from time to time at the pod too. The nitrous has been off my car for over a year now as i've been fiddling with all sorts (tb's, different ecu, new cams, new exhaust manifold, launch control.......) and my best plans went out of the window time wise this year!. Just refitted the nitrous system, dry system now with discharge tubes into each choke with the max2's voltage output feeding the ecu's boost input so i have fuel/ignition maps for the nitrous delivered. Like you, there's plenty to set up myself now!, but it should be the best it's ever been once it's fine tuned 8)

Will hopefully try and join you on the 20th  Front subframe is currently out being refurbed (when it stops raining) and I'm itching to get back up there!

My AFR chart only goes down to 11.8 which is 0.8 lambda with 8% CO. So its rich as fook. 11.8 AFR is my normal safe running tune with the blower. I know what you mean about time being your enemy Ian :)
Let me know when you will be at Pod. I've given my work the full list of 2013 RWYB dates + a few other events as my "perry not available for weekend work" list 8)

You reckon you will make the Retro Show this year??

11:1 on boost is safe rich, you could well be running richer than 9.8:1 as thats where most widebands top out. I'd pull 10 percent fuel out, run again and see where the afr sits.

My car hates richer than 11 and I aim for 11. 5 when tuning.

Thanks Keith!
11.8 seems to be my sweet spot for AFR on this engine. Pull fuel out??? Hell no!! Add more boost to lean it off :omgrofl:

Less than 2 weeks to go, just got to get my drag tyres/wheels balanced and collect my nitrous bottles. A few quick test runs on nitrous to check everythings working as expected with the new installation (and so i can start at the pod at 75 or 100bhp and go up from there  ) and then i'm all ready for a weekend of fun :D :D

Didn't get to Santa Pod at all last year, so i'm quiet looking forward to it  plus seeing Perry's mgb again with a huge blower popping out of bonnet which looks and sounds great 8) :D

Sadly my MGB will not be at the Fast show Ian. But my Blower setup will be ???

I have a coolant loss problem that is bugging me. Jasons 4.6 in the Escort developed a very odd misfire, which turned out to possibly be a cracked liner as he was pressurising the coolant system to overflow during his burnouts.

I've been booked in for work on the fast show weekend So I'm going to work right through on the Saturday to get the job finished so I can get to the track on the Sunday, or maybe late Saturday night.

Jason wants to do some gentle runs to check out the rear suspension mods. But his engine is faulty. So we chucked a spare 3500 rover lump in to get it moving. And for a giggle he has thrown my blower on top to see how the stock 3500 will perform on boost ;)

He wont be making any PB's but he will have some fun I'm sure ??

I'll see you there on the Sunday mate

I'm sure we can have some fun any way

I doubt i'll be setting any pb's either, i've done so many changes to the car since the last time i used n20 i'll have to check afr's/plugs after each run before stepping it up.

Hopefully i'll get quite a few runs in on Saturday and if everything goes to plan by my last run on Sunday i'll be putting a reasonable amount in again 8).

I got the car out for testing last weekend and accidentally ran a new PB. Not a big improvement as it was only down from 10.29 to 10.23 seconds. But it went quicker with less nitrous and boost and I wasnt trying that hard. :)

Thats pleased me a lot to be honest!!

That's great news

Just watched your vid links on the other thread, looks great. It just looks so wrong but so right with the super charger set-up virtualy up to the same height as the roof line :P 8) :D :salute:

Thanks Ian!!

The theory is that the air must be cooler further up ? :omgrofl:

Actually its the home brewed adaptors I've lashed on to fit the dominator carb and bug catcher. When I've got the hallway painted and some new decking paid for I'll be ordering in a few bits from the USA. I'm thinking I might change to a shotgun scoop next?

See you at Retro Show hopefully ??

I did it while testing the new engine tune today Ian.............

I wont ramble on about what I did and how I set up the nitrous. Here are my vids from the two runs I did today.
