The title is most appropriate, as it was something said in the Bandit 1200 thread.
I have been very quiet of late, as I was so fed up having an 840 that was unusable (Nothing to do with Nitrous).

Even since the rebuild some 18 months ago, it has smoked one way or another, to the point where it became an embarrasment. I racked mine and others brains for a solution, even rebuilding it again and again including the replacement of ALL valve guides.

A couple of months ago Brett suggested a change of oil type, which seemed to work, but didn't last, so that got me thinking. The spec of my engine has changed dramatically, but we were still using the same basic oil. I have spent the last few weeks chatting on the Bimmerforum E31 section and we came to the conclusion I needed a serious oil upgrade.

Today the engine was flushed and Castrol EDGE 10w-60 was poured in.
The smoking has ceased both on start up and driving.
I've also put standard plugs back in, as with the colder ones idle was uneven and were constantly fouling.
Idle is now much smoother and quieter.
The V8 is back to running how it was 2 years ago.
Thats the best £94 I have spent on the car.

Castrol EDGE 10w-60 is recommended for M-Series, looks like I've finally got it right
Although EDGE TWS 10w-60 would have been even better, thats next time.
I'M BACK

Hi Richard :)

Good to see the oil grade change worked :)

Mostly when there is a mechanical problem with an engine its the simple answer thats the solution....

As an example, Porsche 928s like mine when bought second hand often have a missfire or two.... and when asked for advice , I always say when were the plugs , dizzy caps (2) and rotor arms (2) last CHANGED ...NOT checked but actually CHANGED....

Nine times out of ten , changing those simple parts cures the problem...

So as general advice, do the simple stuff first, and only look for the complicated stuff once thats done :)

All the best Brett :)

I don't think anyone believed the oil would make such a difference or indeed be the fix. I've just got back from my BMW main dealer having had a chat with the guys there. They were stunned at the final solution, although as soon as I said Alusil Bores + Forged pistons + New Rings, I was met with knowing nods of "that now makes sense". I cannot believe its taken me 18 months to basically figure this out for myself. You never stop learning

No chance, I'm going back to basics.
Have to figure out the last mishap first, before I even consider anything higher than a 50 shot.
We know it can do a little better as Vivenne coasted over the line when she did the final 13.7 @ 96 due to valve failure.
It only stopped smoking a couple of hours ago, so I'm still finding myself looking back at the exhaust for that fateful blue cloud :beatstick:
I want to enjoy it for a while before I rag it again :omgrofl:
