I am rebuilding the Rover 4.9 (it actually 4887cc) V8 to make it a fresh built engine, and then I'm selling it. It will be for sale as a complete supercharged Drag Race engine minus the WoN of course

The Rover has done me proud, but the stupid big wheelie caused some damage because the engine wasnt set up for running at that angle. I'm happy that the run itself would have been an 8 if I had been able to keep my foot in from the start line. This isnt a FOR SALE advert by the way ! I'm just explaining what I'm doing for the end of this year. The Rover spun some bearings and damaged the crank and some rods. So I'm having a new crank offset ground and fitting new Chevy Conrods which will be machined to fit the Rover Crank and pistons as before. The block will be re honed and I'll fit new rings and bearings and then put it up for sale. I was going to fit the engine and then bed it in on track, but that will waste me several weeks, so I'll sell it as a fresh build.

I am now in the process of building a small block chevy for the MGB. I found a fantastic deal on 3 SBC lumps for silly money. They have all done no more than a few miles and they are like new inside. Sadly, non of the internals are any good to me. I'm going to bore and stroke the 5.7 litre lump out to 6.3 litres with a forged 383 crank and fit all forged rods and pistons, Solid cam, roller lifters and roller rockers etc. All the bells and whistles I need to see the engine make an easy 650hp on the carb (s) only. As the blower is going I will be fitting a tunnel ram inlet manifold with 2 holley 600 carbs so I can still have a lot of metalwork sticking up out of the bonnet in between Zoomie exhausts. I will be fitting MSD digital 7 programmable ign system (which is in a box on my stairs right now) There are lots of other goodies going on the Chevy lump in order to make this the last engine I will need to build for the MGB. And when its all bedded in it will make the MGB run high 8's without stressing the engine once its had a bit of charge cooling added by using ????

And when i have done this my good mate FRED will do his job and push me on to mid to low 8's in 2016. And thats where I intend to leave it. Mid 8's is a great number and I will be happy with that in a 40 year old steel bodyshell.

The transmission and rear axle upgrades over the years have all been done to accept this Chevy powerplant when the time was right. And the time is now

I should have the Rover newly remanufactured and ready for sale by the end of April. Hopefully it will be sold by the end of May. Then i can start buying new stuff for the new engine. This should see the Chevy lump built by the end of June and in the car for shakedowns by Mid August.

Thats the plan so far ??

Normally I wouldn't encourage anyone to switch from a Rover to a Chevy but in your case, although the extra weight is normally undesirable, in your case it will be advantageous as it's in the right place to help keep the front end down.

The old Rover V8 will be good for 9's in any car weighing in around 2600lbs if the transmission will cope with it.

I know the car WILL run an 8 with the Rover now. But I want a low 9 or high 8 as the norm for the SBC lump with no gas. Then i can turn the wick up and let FRED do the business for my mid to low 8's later this year or early next year ??

All makes sense to me, i like the old rover v8's but it looks like it's cheaper and easier to get more power from a Chevy big cast iron lump so go for it

Parts are starting to arrive for the MGB's new engine

I now have two Holley 600dp carbs. A new dual quad tunnel ram inlet manifold, MSD digital 7, Mallory billet dissy, Comp cams gear drive for the camshaft, and now a pair of new Brodix 225cc Dragon slayer heads. I also have a pair of vintage Mickey Thompson rocker covers The next BIG item to buy will be the rotating assembly. I have opted at the moment for a 396ci (6.5 litre near as damn it) stroker kit with a Scat forged Crank, Scat forged H beam rods and Mahle forged pistons. I will have to wait until i sell the rover V8 to buy the rotating kit. Then it will be the purchase of all the little bits which will no doubt add up to a fair chunk of cash such as starter motor, sump pan, timing cover, pulley assembly including crank trigger wheel and sensor for the MSD, alternator, zoomie exhaust system, carb linkage kit, twin carb bug catcher, custom ally radiator + gaskets all round and ARP stuff all round, roller camshaft, roller lifters, push rods and roller rocker gear !! The list goes on and on eh ? But it will all be worth it in 2016 when the MGB rolls out for shakedown runs

It's always the little bits and pieces that add up to more than you think, usually double on some of my projects by the time i've done them right!

OH My!!
How stuff can drag on and take more time than intended. Its now October 2015 and I'm just about to rebuild the Rover V8 ready for sale. I didnt want to skimp on the new build though. I've ended up with a brand new crank that has been offset ground to match the original crank which was bent and also a new set of chevy 5700 rods which have been altered to my specs. And the whole lot has just come back from balancing. So I can now spend some time re building the beasty Rover V8.
The trouble is I'm working most weekends and also trying to buuild a conservatory for the wife

I've now moved my shakedown target to June 2016. I'm in no rush now as I want this to be my last V8 build for the MGB. I've been reading about the SBC and I want to get it right first time with regards to Best Build for my Buck on this engine.

I've got two buyers on the hook for the rebuilt Rover so it may be sold in the next 8 weeks.

To be honest I wont be miffed if I break the gearbox or any other part of the drivetrain when the SBC is working ok. I can fix tranny and diff issues. I just dont want to be doing engine repairs anymore ?

I now need to buy the rotating assembly for the SBC + cam, lifters and push rods. OH!! I also need an alternator. But apart from that its gaskets and bolts mainly.

I'm so looking forward to the Xmas break when I can get busy on cage and chassis tweaks while I'm waiting for parts to arrive next year?

Its funny that, as I get older I get more relaxed about the delays in reaching my goals ? Mainly because as we strive on in days gone by to do better and better and then break our stuff up, we learn what NOT to do next. And as time goes on we end up with a long list of Do's and Dont's eh? And as we get older the list of "Dont's" gets shorter due to our experiences in years gone by.

I have no doubt now that my SBC build will run the low 10's to mid 9's on the carbs only becuase I'm doing my homework and buying the right stuff. And I have even less doubt that when the SBC build (on my limited budget) has maxxed itself out at these times, my good mate 20 year old FRED will do his job properly with my 13 year old pulsoids to see the MGB hitting its first ever 8 second pass.

I know I'm getting older, but the build time for the new engine seems not to be an issue because I'm confident now about what I can do wtih a V8 and I dont need to worry about FRED and his mates doing what they have done for me since 2008 when I need them to step up to the plate.

I will have a funky new MSD system that will take instructions from FRED when he wants some ign retard at WOT.

I was a bit tearful to see my fully rebuilt Blown Rover V8 leave for its new home last Saturday

Me and that old engine have been through so much together. Its pushed me to have have "the quickest Rover powered MGB in the world" with my regular mid 9's on track. And now its going into another MGB GT And this one is, according to the new owner of this particular MGB, 700lbs lighter than my full steel bodied door slammer

This car was well known back in the day and its now being refreshed to run my old power plant. The new owner is going to replicate my whole drive train with a TH350 box + a rear end with as close to 3:1 diff as possible + strong shafts and 28" tall slicks ??

AND Wheelie bars?? My old drive train will flip that car over in no time with a good hook up

Glad to hear your old combo has found such a good home. Phil was racing in the same era as I was but he never had a chance, as he was on a VERY tight budget and he never really managed to get a handle on the whole deal.

If the new owner does a better job (which wouldn't be hard), he should do extremely well, especially as things have moved on so much since that car was last raced by Phil.

The new owner should do well Trev.
If the Bee is as light as he says it is he will run low 11's or high 10's just on the boost

And he will certainly have his hands full when he turns the gas on

Phil is now doing another Bee ! This one will just be a cruiser with a Jag V12 under the hood

I'm also now going to have a look at my mates new WoN system on his SBC Landrover. It looks quite cool to be honest. 8 ITB's and lots of injectors

BTW Perry you don't happen to know anyone selling ANY car that takes a Rover V8 engine, that is minus the engine etc. do you?
