NITROUS OXIDE ( nos / n2o ) advice forum

Hi all

im Nathan (yes another one) i run a JDM Honda Prelude which ive owned from import. which is as far from standerd as it can possibly be
the engine is still a H22A 2.2 vtec but now pushing 529hp (maxing out the turbine) at 19psi boost.

That exhaust manifold looks rather hot, almost as hot as the performance is going to be when you've finished the conversion from NOS to WON.

just to point out that i built everything you see in and on that car, except the obvious (wheels, chassis, things like that) but all pipe work, metal work fabrication from the half roll cage to the custom radiator front end extension was done on the my driveway, not even a garage..... not for long tho, purpose built unit here we come

My first thought was that you either didn't have a garage or it was used as a workshop only, quite some achievement if you had but even more so under such circumstances.

Just a little observation from my experience with these power levels....you might want to look into a bigger radiator.

thanks for the observation, if i had a £1 for every person that has said that i cud make 3 of these cars but would still keep the same rad setup.

by saying what im about to say i hope i dont offend anyone........ with my experience with honda's (and other jap cars, high revving 4 cyclinders) ive come to learn that the honda engine is by miles and mile the most effiecent with airflow and in many other ways as well take th enew civic type r k20a for example, that can handle 450whp with out any internal work forced induction and with minor bolt on N/A mods with produce in excess of 230whp and retain a better fuel consumption. (whp = hp at the wheels)

regarding my rad/cooling setup, ive run this setup from the start, so about 2 years now, i think i can safely and easily say that my car runs cold (in a sinse of speaking) at full power they about 80-85 degrees and my oil temps about the same, i can also say its not the size of the rad that matters most but the location (all has to do with airflow)and quality of the cores. my rad doesnt sit in the factory loaction, it sits 5 inches forward, there is very good reasoning for doing this. I cut off and extensively modify the front end, no more front cross member (my "homemade" traction bars keeps it rigid)

My experience comes from putting 300-700hp cars on road racing circuits, and drag strips. If your temps are solid, there's no point in making things complicated.

SWEET, well there are guys running 600-800whp with the same rad i have revving to 9500rpm

just an update, ive got the intake manifold off the car, here are some pics




ill post up my spec sheet when this is done, BTW ive taken it down the strip, on street radials i ran 12.4 @127mph. i a crappy launcher so if i get my launches dialed in ill be 11's no probs

so first of all i marked the centre of the runner where it meets the flange


Then replaced the fuel rail so i cud see where i had space to put the VENOM injectors(fuel) once i found the spot, i DOT punched it and drilled and tapped to M6

welding up the old NOS ~(GOOD BYE FOREVER) fogger holes, cleared a space in the garden shed so i cud weld.....


here is what i used to mock the bend radius. i used 2.5mm alloy TiG rod, a short peice of the 4mm WON nylon hose which has an internal of 2.5mm so it held the rod nice and tight, pics below



here is a mock up of my 1st attempt of the bend radius, i used a 2.5" pipe to form the radius, holes were drilled and tapped 1/4 BSP taper

and some more updates...... this system is going to be so so so so so nasty, i love it.
ok well after sending the mock up nitrous tube pics to the nitrous wizard, we have decided that the bend radius is to sharp and we need to keep things flowing as smoooooothly as possible as nitrous reacts badly to sharp bends and abrupt changes in flow.
so here are the new mock up pics, see how much better the entry angle is now?

some updates, getting close to finishing it of now
i was so so nervous when it was time to bend the stainless pipes, screw up on these and a new one it will be. i used a 5" dia pipe i had laying around from a exhaust i did a while back to form the smooth bend, i made a clip on the 5" pipe to hold the stainless steel nitrous tube



i love this shot, looks pretty mean if you get what i mean........

Looking REAL GOOD but I'd retract the fuel injectors till there is only 1 thread protruding through the manifold wall.

thanks Trev, yea i know i need to retract them out a bit, that pic was just to show. what i have found is that with the black spacer i still have some threads protruding.......

Fantastic looking setup and superb build, nice to see someone do all the work themself too, I bet it gives you a massive sense of achievement every time you fire her up!

well my setup is done (almost), ive some how deleted the final stages of completion ill try and get some beter pics cause these are a bit naff.
im planning on running 2 bottles where the passenger seats used to be so some more fab work for people to look at
so here are some crappy pics of the job, will be making a cage for the bottles....... mmmmm shiny stainless pipe....




so results will be next, so watch this space.

whats the big bar in this pic?

the 'BIG' bar you refering to is the traction bar/ front cross member setup i built as im FWD. they are adjustable too. the Honda Prelude comes standerd with traction bars which also house the front engine mount, i had to get rid of the standerd setup to run a 4" downpipe so ive made my own front engine mount, see below

so where does the other end of the traction bar go to? (Im FWD as well and anything that may help )
