having bought some magnecor leads, my coil is US being the small pole type from a bmw originally, so i want a replacement that wont cost the earth, and my choices appear to be, although i could be wrong:

bosch blue 12v non ballast (part number ends 9027) as recommended by tony on his V8 website

or the lucas gold affair DL105 (i Think) again 12v non ballast

or am i miles off in either direction!?

what are we using, what works, or what do you recommend from experience?

as the drag racing is well and truly rained off im filling my day with this exciting task!

MSD Blaster 2 coil in either can type or transformer type are good. They are about £45 each. I've had the can type on the Mgb for 6 years and we just fitted the tranny type to Jays Escort. Good rugged units with a good spark. Well worth a look I think. Very rugged items :)
Just make sure you fit a ballast resistor if required.

The BLUE Bosch coil is NOT intended for V8 use (check out the Bosch catalogue if there's any doubt who is right about this matter) and is specified for FOUR cylinder use. The Bosch coil for a V8 is the RED BALLASTED version and I used one of those to run my record times, plus we've sold 100s more to customers who have also had troublefree results.

Stay away from those they are TOTAL GARBAGE.

Yup MILES OFF!!!!

The Bosch coil & ballast aren't the cheapest option, so we also offer a cheaper brand of coil that has similar specification, to reduce the cost a bit.

This is the cheaper brand complete with ballast @ £48 which is approx £10 cheaper than the Bosch including ballast;

The advantage of having a ballasted coil, is that you can run it at low voltage until you nail the nitrous and then you can switch bypass the ballast (as I included in our own brand of ignition systems, which BTW I may still have some of), to boost the spark strength without overloading the coil excessively.

Good words Trev!!

A lot of folk dont realise that 4 cylinder coils dont have the capacity to charge in time between sparks for V8 use.

Exactly right Perry - most people also don't know that unless they MATCH the resistance of the coil to the SAME as the coil DESIGNED to be used with the ignition system, in most cases of fitting a high powered coil, they will burn out the ignition either very rapidly or at least more rapidly than would otherwise be the case.

Made that mistake myself. But only once:) I now even keep a spare ceramic ballast resistor in the tool box :)

i think the upshot of this bebarcle was if it isnt broken, dont try to fix it, just ended up modding the coil lead tip to fit my bosch coil, as the other just wouldnt run with the ballast connected, and cut out spontaneously without it!

c'est la vie!
